History

Scooter popularity is fueled in no small part by their affordability in terms of upfront price-point, cost of fuel, and easy to operate and repair. Licenses are easier to obtain and insurance is usually cheaper.

Scooters began to develop from motorcycle designs at the turn of the 19th century. The step-through design now associated with scooters was first a part of early motorcycle design, but while the frames of motorcycles changed to accommodate larger and more powerful components, scooters remained smaller less-powerful vehicles.

The first true scooter entered production in 1915. The number of units produced increased alongside manufacturers after World War I. Unfortunately these first-generation scooters were viewed as unstable machines with frames too flexible to hold together. Those models that didn’t have these problems were seen as prohibitively expensive. The second generation of scooters developed during and after World War II, where many smaller personal motorized vehicles were rapidly replacing horses as the quickest means to get from Point A to Point B. Heartier designs with engineering innovations helped create a more stable scooter. After the war, production facilities were ready to pump out modern scooters at lower costs. 

Global production was inflated by great demand in distinct geographical regions. Japanese aircraft manufacturers, now forbidden from making aircraft, had to find other products to make. Inspired by scooters used by American servicemen, the Fuji Rabbit hit Japanese markets with surplus military parts. Similar stories can be found in post-war Italy and Germany, where the light vehicles were great at zipping down narrow European streets. India, China, and Southeast Asian states all made use of improving manufacturers and found scooters to be a pragmatic way to get industrial products into the hands of the average citizen.
